Cavalleria Rusticana was released in fascist Italy on October 24, 1939, directed by Amleto Palermi, who had already directed several films by Angelo Musco and a couple of Totò's early films. Produced by Scalera Film, founded by two Neapolitan brothers just a year earlier on Mussolini's recommendation with the aim of becoming the highest expression of Italian film production and distribution thanks to funding allocated by law to an increasingly self-sufficient industry that wanted to emancipate itself from American dominance, whose studio system nevertheless served as its model.
The film is faithfully inspired by Verga's novella without involving Mascagni's subsequent work in the staging and writing, who, moreover, denied permission to use his score. The result is not without merit, especially in the first part, shot on location with a degree of realism guaranteed by the dusty, sun-baked landscape in which mules and carts move.
The scene of a procession stands out in particular, in which the director hired the friars of the Confraternity of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria in Paternò as extras to carry the statue of San Vincenzo on their shoulders. This extensive segment, with its effective folklore, is followed by a second part dominated by interiors and more artificial wooden and cardboard sets, in which the performances echo, as always at the time, in strict live recording and with some inevitable affectation on the part of the actors. Among them we find Isa Pola, one of the great actresses of the period, in the role of Santuzza, but above all the sensual Lola played by Doris Duranti, a diva of the regime, companion of Minister Pavolini and one of the stars of the few films produced years later in the Social Republic.
The deadly rustic duel, accompanied by the solemn notes composed by Alessandro Cicognini, sees the knives of veteran Carlo Ninchi, Alfio, cross with those of the handsome but inexpressive Turiddu played by Leonardo Cortese. The film was well received by the more patriotic critics - “an Italian film like few others,” wrote Ugo Ojetti in Film - but also by the public, as demonstrated by the referendum held in November 1939 by the magazine Cinema, whose readers voted it the best film produced in the country since 1930.
