During World War Two, Flying Officer Rupert Pengelly spends six months in the British colony of Rhodesia. Whilst there, he searches for his friend's orphaned daughter, Sasa, having made a promise to look after her. The search is futile and Rupert returns to the theatre of war. Eventually returning to his home in Cornwall, with the future looking bright and promising, Rupert discovers all is not as it should be as his distant cousin, George Geake, has conspired to cheat him out of his inheritance.

Rising from his despair, a new and deep passion begins to grow, one to last him all his life. And why? He had heard the cry of a fish eagle, enslaving him to Africa forever. But yet, what of Sasa? And what of her eccentric grandfather, a prospector looking for emeralds? Will he ever find them?
But nothing can prepare him for what is next. Another war is looming. The irrepressible tide of black nationalism is sweeping through Africa and life is about to change forever.
