L'attimo fuggente è un film del 1989 diretto da Peter Weir.
Nell'autunno del 1959, John Keating (Robin Williams), un giovane insegnante di letteratura, viene trasferito nel prestigioso collegio maschile Welton, nel Vermont. L'arrivo del professore, ex allievo della scuola, scombussola l’ordine e il rigore che da sempre caratterizzano quel luogo: egli infatti utilizza fin da subito un approccio didattico non proprio conforme ai rigidi principi dell'accademia.
John desidera che i ragazzi apprendano i veri valori della vita, insegnando loro a vivere momento per momento, perché ogni secondo che passa non tornerà mai più. Cogliere l’attimo e vivere senza rimorsi è ciò che veramente conta secondo il professore, il quale cerca di stimolare lo spirito creativo dei ragazzi attraverso il potere della poesia.
L’entusiasmo di Keating conquista lo studente Neil Perry (Robert Sean Leonard), un diciassettenne da sempre oppresso da un padre autoritario, che scopre in se stesso la vocazione per il teatro. Così come Neil, anche altri studenti seguono con particolare interesse gli stravaganti insegnamenti di John: Todd (Ethan Hawke) e altri cinque ragazzi decidono di riportare in vita la Setta dei Poeti Estinti, un gruppo dedito alla poesia che si riunisce clandestinamente, di cui in passato anche Keating faceva parte.
Non tutti però gradiscono il nuovo stato di cose: i metodi di Keating e le azioni dei suoi allievi non vengono visti di buon occhio dai genitori e dal preside Nolan (Norman Lloyd), poiché si scontrano con le rigide regole conformiste che da sempre la scuola vuole inculcare agli studenti...
