TRAMA

A Baltimora, il giovane avvocato Arthur Kirkland sbatte inutilmente il capo contro il muro di un sistema giudiziario che, anziché servire alla giustizia nella quale egli crede, offre a giudici o capricciosi o corrotti le armi dei cavilli legali per infierire sproporzionatamente sui colpevoli oppure per distruggere degli innocenti spediti in prigioni tutt'altro che educative. Il giudice Rayford, uno stravagante vecchietto, offrendo ad Arthur la sua disinteressata amicizia, tenta di sorreggerlo nell'impari lotta mediante l'offerta di svaghi pazzeschi che il quadrato giovanotto non riesce ad apprezzare. Un maggiore sostegno Kirkland lo riceve dal vecchio genitore Sam che lui puntualmente va a trovare ogni settimana sino a che, troppo preso dagli sviluppi successivi, non lo abbandona per un mesetto sino a provocarne la totale involuzione senile. Ma il vero avversario del giovane idealista è il giudice Henry Fleming, un sadico che ha condannato alla prigione e ha spinto ad un fatale gesto di rivolta un innocente cliente di Arthur.
