TRAMA:
Basato sul manga giapponese di fama mondiale, "The Ghost in the Shell", dell'artista Masamune Shirow, il film Ghost in the Shell è ambientato in un futuro non troppo lontano, in cui il confine tra uomo e tecnologia è sempre più labile, e dove ritroviamo il Maggiore (Scarlett Johansson), una donna unica nel suo genere. Vittima di un terribile incidente, è stata salvata dalla morte e trasformata in un soldato perfetto tramite una modificazione cibernetica che l'ha resa un ibrido tra cyborg e essere umano, modificazione di cui è stata reponsabile la dottoressa Ouelet (Juliette Binoche) uno dei principali scienziati della Hanka Corporation. Il Maggiore è stata messa alla guida di un reparto speciale della polizia, la task force speciale Section 9 con a capo Daisuke Aramaki (Takeshi Kitano), incaricato di sventare i piani dei più pericolosi criminali del mondo. Tra i primi compiti assegnati c'è quello di trovare e terminare Kuze (Michael Pitt), la mente criminale dietro ad un audace attacco ad un alto dirigente della Hanka Corporation. Grazie alle sue capacità fuori del comune, è l'unica in grado di scovare e affrontare la nuova minaccia, un nemico capace di insinuarsi nelle menti cibernetiche fino ad assumerne il completo controllo. Mentre si prepara ad affrontare questo un nuovo tipo di terrorismo una terribile verità sul suo passato salta fuori: il Maggiore scopre infatti che le hanno mentito, la sua vita non è stata salvata, in realtà le è stata rubata. Da quel momento in poi non si fermerà davanti a nulla pur di svelare il mistero legato alla sua esistenza, recuperare il proprio passato e scoprire chi le ha fatto ciò e riuscire a bloccarlo prima che possa fare la stessa cosa ad altri.
STORYLINE:
In the near future, Major Motoko Kusanagi (Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible terrorist attack, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people's minds and control them, Major Kusanagi is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major Kusanagi discovers that she has been lied to: her life was not saved, it was stolen. She will stop at nothing to recover her past, find out who did this to her and stop them before they do it to others.
