Note : Rumor has it, when word got out that James Cameron was making an underwater sci-fi movie, three other films were rushed into production, and came out the same year as Cameron's The Abyss. This, by genre veteran Cosmatos, is probably the best of them, playing like a mix of Alien and The Thing underwater. It's not original, but it's solid, with a cast that's a who's who of character actors you know and love, including Peter Weller, Richard Crenna, Amanda Pays, Ernie Hudson, Daniel Stern, and Meg Foster, and the chunky 80s futuristic production design is by Ron Cobb (Star Wars, Alien, The Abyss, Total Recall). The practical effects and miniatures look great (and very goopy), the premise is intriguing, and the cast is good, so who cares if the script is predictable and the monster design ends up not being very satisfying in the end? It's a fun watch that'll put you off seafood for a while.

Geologist Steven Beck is head of an underwater mining operation for Tri-Oceanic Corp., leading a crew of 8 on a three-month rotation. The crew discovers an undocumented Soviet wreck, The Leviathan, whose captain has been kind enough to leave behind one of those apocalyptic video logs of weird medical problems amongst the crew. There's also a bottle of vodka, swiftly stolen by disgusting man-pig Sixpack and shared with his sort of love interest Bowman. Sixpack falls ill and dies, and when Bowman, who's also starting to feel the effects, finds his corpse mutating, she kills herself. Beck requests evacuation, but mining exec Martin reports a storm will delay all operations on the surface for at least 12 hours. Bowman and Sixpack's bodies are found to have grown together, and the crew decides to eject them, but as they do, the bodies start moving, clawing Cobb in the chest. They realize the Soviet ship was subject to some sort of mutagen experiment, and pieces of the creature are still on board with them, leading to a cat and mouse game between some very slimy creatures and what remains of the crew.

This 4k remaster is a very nice upgrade over the previous version, with nice, crisp image, restrained grain, and good color and contrast. We also get both the 5.1 remaster, which sounds good, the original stereo, and a commentary track.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk sci-fi” for more tales of the future, “hevk body horror” for more mutations and mutilations of the human body, or “hevk 80s” for more from the decade of goopy, slimy practical effects.
