Life, the Universe and Everything

In this the third volume of Douglas Adam's galactic adventures, Arthur Dent is saved from isolation of life in a cave on prehistoric Earth when Fort Prefect discovers a pool of instability in the fabric of space-time and the two friends are able to escape via apaisley-covered Chesterfield sofa which appears suddenly in a field and which deposits them in the middle of the pitch at Lord Cricket Ground in the 1980's - exactly two days before the Earth is to be demolished by the Vogons to make way for a new hyperspatial express route.
