Una ragazzina di 13 anni accetta una breve supplenza nella scuola di una zona rurale e misera della Cina, in cui anche i gessetti sono un bene prezioso. Affronta completamente impreparata le difficoltà dell’insegnamento e stenta a imporre attenzione e ordine ai piccoli scolari. L’assenza di uno degli alunni, costretto dalla situazione familiare a lavorare in città, la costringe ad affrontare un viaggio disagevole e un’affannosa ricerca.
La giovanissima maestra è spinta dalla promessa di una ricompensa in denaro, fatta dal maestro che la ragazzina sostituisce, - a condizione che al suo ritorno, non ci sia neppure uno di meno degli alunni – ma anche dalla necessità di non deludere le aspettative del maestro,unita a una certa caparbietà di carattere e - si intuisce solo alla fine - a un sincero interessamento per la sorte del ragazzino, solo e affamato nella sconosciuta città.

A 13 year old girl accepts a brief substitute school in a rural area and poor in China, where even the chalk are a valuable asset. Faces completely unprepared difficulties of teaching and struggling to impose order and attention to small pupils. The absence of one of the pupils, forced by family circumstances to work in the city, forces her on a journey uncomfortable and headlong quest.
The young teacher is driven by the promise of a cash reward, made by the teacher that the girl replaces - provided that on his return, there is not even one less students - but also by the need to meet the expectations of the teacher combined with a certain obstinacy of character and - you can imagine at the end - a sincere concern for the fate of the boy, lonely and hungry in the unknown city.
