Description

OSIP EMILYEVICH MANDELSTAM (1891-1938)
was a Russian poet and essayist, and a founding member of Acmeist school of Russian poetry. Heavily censored and persecuted by the Soviet authorities for counter-revolutionary activities, he spent most of his later years in exile.

Mandelstam was distinguished by a complete commitment to his vocation as a poet-prophet and poet-martyr. Without permanent residence or steady employment but for a brief interlude in the early 1930s, he lived the life of an archetypal poet, dispersing manuscripts among his friends and relying on their memories for "archiving" his unpublished poetry. It was primarily through the efforts of his widow, Nadezhda, that little of Mandelstam's poetry was lost; she kept his works alive during the repression by memorizing them and by collecting copies.

He died anonymously en route to the Siberian gulag in 1938, thus fulfilling his own grim prophecy: "Only in Russia is poetry respected; it gets people killed. Is there anywhere else where poetry is so common a motive for murder?"
