De wat naïeve zeekapitein James McKay komt in een vete om waterrechten terecht tussen de rancherfamilies Terrill en Hannassey, wanneer hij op de ranch gaat logeren van zijn geliefde Patricia Terrill, die hij in het Oosten heeft leren kennen. In plaats van in deze vete partij te kiezen, probeert James een paard te temmen op de 'Terrill Ranch', tot grote teleurstelling van de verwende Patricia en de jaloerse voorman Steve Leech. James maakt het namelijk niet uit dat de eer van hem en Patricia onderweg naar de Terrill Ranch zou zijn aangetast door de vernederingen van een aangeschoten Buck Hannassey. James maakt dan ook geen deel uit van de strafexpeditie tegen de Hannassey's onder leiding van Patricia's vader en ex-majoor Henry Terrill. Het land is groot genoeg om een waterman als James te herbergen, maar lijkt kennelijk te klein voor twee families om vreedzaam naast elkaar te bestaan en het land met de rivier, waarover de strijd gaat, is geërfd door de zachtaardige lerares en Patricia's vriendin Julie Maragon, waarop hij verliefd is geworden.

The somewhat naive sea captain James McKay comes in a feud between the right to water rights rancherfamilies Terrill and Hannassey, when he goes to stay with his beloved Patricia Terrill, who he met in the East. At the ranch To choose in this feud party instead of James tries to tame the "Terrill Ranch ', much to the disappointment of the spoiled Patricia and jealous foreman Steve Leech a horse. James is not the fact that the honor of him and Patricia way would have been affected by the humiliation of a wounded buck Hannassey. Terrill to the Ranch James therefore makes no part of the crackdown on the Hannassey's led by Patricia's father and former Major Henry Terrill.
