Summary:

Lilli Palmer owns and runs a school for wayward girls in France. Her absolute discipline has fostered a social order among the girls with rampant sex, lesbianism and torture the norm. Palmer also has an adolescent son (Moulder Brown) she tries to keep isolated from the young women lest he be tainted by sexual relations; She explains that he must wait for a girl "just like his mother". Meanwhile, girls are "running away" (being murdered) one by one, with their corpses and any evidence of their outcome not to be found.

Note : Spanish director Narciso Ibañez Serrador has kind of a legendary status in the annals of Euro-horror, despite having only directed a couple of films, although his influence is felt throughout Spanish horror even today. This is his first feature, a period piece proto-slasher set in a girls' boarding school which had a pretty clear influence on Suspiria, as well as a number of other films. It's light on gore and violence (with a couple of brief exceptions), but long on atmosphere, looks very stylish, and has several very good performances, including those of leads Lilli Palmer, Cristina Galbó, John Moulder-Brown, and Mary Maude. If you enjoy the more atmospheric gialli like Blood and Black Lace, I think you'll like this.

In a boarding school for troubled girls in 1800s France, headmistress Señora Fourneau rules with an iron fist over both the students and her son Luis, whom she wants to keep far from any of the girls, saying they're not good enough for him. Her second in command is Irene, a student who is only to happy to dish out lashings and other punishments for any transgression. Into this tense environment comes new student Teresa, who notices odd things happening and a sense of being watched from the moment she arrives. As a girl goes mysteriously missing, Teresa starts a romance with Luis, but is bullied by the other students, and decides to run away, however, her escape attempt leads only to further tragedy at the hands of a mysterious killer stalking the school.

This Arrow remaster is very nice-looking, color is maybe slightly dull, but it fits the visual style, and the textures are silky with a fine, tight grain structure, contrast is punchy, and it generally looks quite sumptuous. Both mono tracks sound fine (and this is another one of those Euro-productions where actors spoke different languages on set and then were dubbed, although the English track is probably the more canonical one), and the commentary track is quite good, both entertaining and informative.
