Sting's writing becomes more political and personal at the same time, dividing itself between criticism of the contemporary world (Driven To Tears, When The World Is Running Down ..) and references to his life (past experience as a teacher in Don't Stand So Close To Me).
On the musical side Stewart Copeland continues to amaze with his dry, fast and imaginative drumming, Andy Summers is fond of flanger, while the bass plays sideways between funky, reggae and dub. If Canary In A Coalmine and Man In A Suitcase are the most pleasantly light episodes, with their almost ska trend and catchy choruses, Shadows In The Rain is certainly the track on the album in which the Police dare the most: a dub rhythm base. , a piano bichord repeated indefinitely and broken guitar phrases to accompany the distant and muffled voice.
Both for the search for compositional "spaces" and for a more equitable distribution of copyright (now that the band has become a business), Copeland and Summers also sign a little something. Three pearls emerge that have nothing to envy to the rest of the songs. Bombs Away and the instrumental The Other Way Of Stopping highlight Copeland's virtuoso drumming, while the guitarist composes the particular Behind My Camel, a song very far from the Police-style: the melody of the guitar (which uses Arabic scales) drives slow music and hypnotic, in which the sound carpets of the keyboards complete the atmosphere.
“I like to define Zenyatta Mondatta as our commercial album”. If it's Stewart Copeland who says it, we can only believe him. Zenyatta Mondatta is a commercial record because it was recorded for contract requirements, but this does not imply that it is an inferior record to the others. The central place it occupies in the discography and career of the band (third album of five, recorded two years after its debut and three years after its dissolution) is not accidental, beyond the numbers.
