The film follows Helen (Dorothy Maguire), a mute young woman who lost her voice after a tramatic incident during her childhood. She works as a maid at the Warren residence, which houses Professor Albert Warren (George Brent), Albert's mother Mrs. Warren (Ethel Barrymore), and Steven Warren (Gordon Oliver), the black sheep of the family. When a serial killer begins murdering women about town, the police trace the murderer to the Warren residence. Mrs. Warren begs Helen to leave the house, believing Helen is the intended target of the murderer.
