La storia si apre durante la seconda guerra mondiale a Gand, in Belgio, dove alcuni membri dell'esercito stanno tentando di portare in salvo alcune opere d'arte di grande valore dalla presa dei nazisti.
Intanto a New York, lo studioso d'arte Frank Stokes, convince il presidente degli Stati Uniti a permettergli di radunare un gruppo di direttori di musei e esperti d'arte per arruolarli nell'esercito americano con lo scopo di ritrovare tutte le opere d'arte storiche trafugate da Adolf Hitler nei paesi europei.
Dopo aver ingaggiato i vari componenti del gruppo, chiamati "Monuments Men", Stokes si reca con i suoi compagni in Inghilterra per l'addestramento base, dove spiega loro le varie ragioni della sua chiamata e i suoi sospetti su dove potrebbero trovarsi le opere razziate, che molto probabilmente sono state nascoste in Francia. Si recano quindi in un accampamento in Normandia, dove i soldati hanno sorpreso alcuni tedeschi intenti nella rapina di alcuni quadri di Claude Monet. Stokes viene a sapere poi dal suo collaboratore Sam Epstein che questi erano diretti a Siegen, in Germania, con altri camion pieni di affreschi e opere....
Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys - seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 - possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men....
